The Man Wearing Number 9

Every generation of Everton fans has their favourite ever, the one they idolised and dreamed of being best mates with. There have been many great Everton strikers and many that define eras, here is my list of top three Everton strikers ever to don the magnificent Royal Blue Jersey.   Number Three – Graeme Sharp The most decorated man on the list, Graeme was the star at the head of the team of the 1980s. Known for his work rate, shooting ability and movement, Sharpy was a nightmare for defenders alongside Andy Gray. A prolific goal scorer in Everton’s most successful era to date and bagged in some massive games, including against Bayern Munich and Rapid Vienna in the Cup Winners’ Cup, Watford in the FA Cup Final in 1984 and of course his famous goal against Liverpool which probably haunted Mark Lawrenson for a good while.   Like every other player from the 80s, Graeme Sharp won the lot and upon his departure for Oldham Athletic in 1991, he sat at number two in ...

At Home to United

A lot happened in the build-up to the game on Sunday, 26th November 2023. Thousands were raised to produce giant banners and to print enough cards for every person in the ground, which were handed out at several places outside the ground before kick-off. Several Everton fan groups came together to organise a protest that would be inescapable for the powers-that-be. It was loud and it was pointed, the tip of the spear aimed directly at the throat of the Premier League and their kangaroo court commission. We shall not be moved! I have always been proud to be an Evertonian but yesterday made my heart swell even more so than usual. Hearing the boos shake Goodison's rafters as the Premier League anthem played, sustained for the entirety of the "fair play handshake" until kick-off, the sea of purple cards that filled the stands at the same time was a thing of beauty. Repeating the feat on the tenth minute was also masterfully done and at every opportunity when cameras focused i...

The Premier League Is Corrupt

Like every other Everton fan I woke up this morning thinking I wouldn't have to think about the Blues for a week or so due to the International break, but that was shattered at about midday when I was told by a colleague that I should get on Sky Sports News. I wish I hadn't. Everton have been docked an unprecedented 10 points for a single breach of the Premier Leagues financial fair play, Profit and Sustainability rules. What a load of rubbish! We have worked with the Premier League diligently over the last 3 or 4 years to make sure we have complied with every regulation under the sun it seems and have been fully transparent and open with them about our accounts. We've not tried to be sneaky with anything and do deals behind closed doors or under the table like certain other clubs have and yet we are the ones the Premier League decides to drop into the volcano as sacrifice. I'm not saying Everton aren't guilty, they are. We have clearly missed the mark with how the ...

Left Wing/Left Midfield - The Other Half of the Wide Picture

From the gate, left wing/left midfield is going to be difficult because we all know who number one is; so this is an exercise in deciding the other spots on the podium, really.   Here we go then, my top three Left Wing/Midfielders to have ever put on the royal blue jersey.   Number Three – Steven Pienaar In at number three, for me it’s got to be Peanuts. He has to go down as one of David Moyes’ best bits of business in the transfer market to have signed him for relatively naff-all at a time when clubs in the “Big Four” were spending double and triple that. Pienaar was blessed with pace and a bottomless bag of tricks that immediately gave Everton a new edge, we had a player that could do the hard yards without the ball but when he got it, could dazzle and pop up with a goal or two when needed. Add to that the fact he was a full international for South Africa, a product of Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, two of the most prolific promoters of young talent in world fo...

Central Midfield - The Engine Room of Any Team

Central Midfield is probably the most common and widest spectrum compared to other positions on the field. From defensive, all action tacklers like Makelele and Kante, box-to-box battlers like Gerrard and Patrick Viera to the great number tens like Maradona. Everton have had their fair share of great central midfielders over the years, here are my picks for top three.   Number Three, Two and One – Colin Harvey, Howard Kendall & Alan Ball One might accuse me of phoning this one in but from birth we are all taught how good these three were and why the status on Goodison Road is there. I can’t think of any midfielders in Everton’s history that have had quite the impact these three had, the Holy Trinity really must go down as the best we’ve had, because you can’t split them, they were all excellent. Harvey, Kendall and Ball were all part of the great 1970 title winning side and two of them were with Everton for the 1966 FA Cup win as well. Two of them also went on to c...
