Right Wing/Right Midfield - One Half of the Wide Picture

Right Wing or Right Midfield is often a position that takes more of a supporting role to the stars that lead the line up front, the Strikers. But they have a shine all of their own and can often be fantastic goal scorers themselves. Here is my list for the top three Right Mids/Wingers to have passed through Everton’s doors.   Number Three – Mikel Arteta I remember Mikel Arteta being mostly a right mid in his time at Goodison Park, although I know he switched to a more central role later on. Mikel was a player I loved and would do my best to emulate in the street with my mates. His technique was exceptional and rightly so for someone who graduated from La Masia. He was a key component to David Moyes’ team and scored some vital goals for the Toffees over the years. His free kick against Crystal Palace for his first, the blast from distance against Fiorentina and, of course his perfectly placed shot against the other lot all immediately come to mind. But he was also a gre...

Left Back - The Man In The Other Corner

The romance between Everton Football Club and left backs started a long time ago. There have been some top class left backs that we could all name immediately from any era, but there are only 3 that can take a podium place.   Number Three – Leighton Baines Has to be Bainesy here doesn’t it? The best left back Everton have ever had not to win anything, Leighton Baines had everything. He was hard working, tough tackling and dependable, he was also lethal from set pieces and scored dozens of goals from free kicks and penalties over the years; not to mention a few scorchers from open play as well. He was born an Evertonian himself and signed by David Moyes for relative peanuts in 2007. It was his partnership with “Peanuts” Steven Pienaar that was also all remember fondly.   We all have our favourite Leighton Baines goal, for me it’s the Newcastle free kick, closely followed by his thunder-bastard against Leicester City and maybe the two free kicks against West Ham...

Centre Back - The Shield Wall

Centre Back is a position close to the heart of most Everton fans. There have been some giants in that position at the base of the outfield formation over the years. Evertonians celebrate their Centre Backs almost as much as they do the Strikers; which, over the years may have something to do with the sheer number of club Captains that have played that position.   Here are my picks.   Number Three – Dave Watson I will forever be grateful that I’m old enough to have seen him lift the FA Cup. “Waggy” was your typical, strong, no-frills Everton defender. If there was a loose ball anywhere near Everton’s goal, you could probably put bets on which seat in Row Z it was going to break in half because he wasn’t passing it, especially under pressure. I admired Watson’s no-nonsense approach; he was old school and a throwback to Everton’s glory years of winning titles.   To my young mind back then, we were safe with Waggy in defence, alongside any number of the ...

Right Back - The Unsung Heroes

Let’s be honest, not every kid wants to grow up to be Right Back. It’s hardly where the glamour is, nobody remembers the right back, although throughout modern football history it has proven to be one of the cornerstones of the game. There is always a right back, centre backs and a left back in most teams these days. Everton of course have had their fair share of good ones and a few that have to be put into the greatest category.   Here are my picks.   Number Three – Tony Hibbert I grew up watching him at Right Back through the Walter Smith and David Moyes eras. He was ever present and a part of the club establishment. He is a cult hero who has played in an FA Cup final and played in Europe for Everton on a number of occasions.   His career ended with no silverware other than an FA Youth Cup; alongside the likes of Leon Osman, Francis Jeffers, Richard Dunne and Danny Cadamarteri. However few could argue with the impact the one-club man had on the Toffees ove...

The Man Between The Sticks

This is the start of a series I will be doing in which I will be talking about MY top three players in every position to have ever played for Everton Football Club; starting, of course, with the Goalkeeper.   There is a plethora of top class Goalkeepers that have walked through the doors and stood as custodian of Everton’s goal, of course there would be for the club with the most years in top flight football of any club in history.   Number Three – Tim Howard Tim Howard could almost single-handedly define the David Moyes era at Goodison Park, bought for around £3 million in 2007 after a season-long loan the year before. Tim spent 10 years at the club in total and became the first name on Moyes’ team sheet. He was evergreen and dependable; he made some huge saves and was particularly proficient at stopping penalties, as would be showcased during the 2009 FA Cup Semi-Final against his former club, Manchester United.   Tim was also a mainstay with the US...

Our Current Situation

There's no shortage of things to choose from when it comes to what is currently going on at Everton Football Club. We are currently sitting in  sixteen in the Premier League, not great, but obviously could be worse.   My opinion on our current league position is that we should be higher, but then every fan of every club that isn’t first in their league will say that. I would absolutely love for Everton to be first, but I don’t mean to say we deserve to be there; not at all. I would say we should be at least a few places further up than we currently are, having created as many chances as teams currently occupying the top six, but ultimately, and very obviously not putting scoring said chances.   I don’t put this absence of goals down to a lack of application, however; from what I’ve seen the lads are clearly trying. I put the goose egg we bagged in August down to the simple fact that we didn’t have at least a decent quality striker in those early games against Fulh...
